I like Lauryn a lot, she has a very similar sound to WInehouse (rest her soul) and the video was very powerful as well.

    But, Nina brings it home.

    • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 3:57 PM #

Don’t even get me started with these two. I think Lauryn had the potential to be our next Nina had she not been sidetracked by whatever sidetracked her. Oh well, I’ll just enjoy whatever of theirs I can while I can.

Winehouse was a favorite of mine as well. What an absolute waste her dying the way she did. I ask that the Most High receive her and bless her and please bring peace to that soul. Man, my skin is crawling, she must’ve heard me talking about her.

LOL, no I haven’t, but I remember watching the video for “Rehab” on an off channel before she became famous and she knocked my socks off.
I remember trying to find her CDs and nobody had even heard of her, and then *BAM* one month later she was everywhere.

Nina has what nobody seems to want to go for these days, that willingness to not worry about singing pretty and actually make it art.

        Madison Ave strikes again…

        • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 4:13 PM #

Now that is a mouthful. Nina, if she started singing today wouldn’t even make it to America Suicidal–I meant America Idol, she’s not marketable: meaning she not pretty enough and yes, don’t sing pretty. God forbid someone has a soul and heart and uses their voice for something other than selling fucking Pepsi. See, you’ve gotten me started.

          • Thelibertylamp September 6, 2013 at 4:27 PM #

She might not be pretty, her voice might not be pretty, because they are beyond pretty, she and her voice are BEAUTIFUL.

Just like Picasso’s work is not pretty, it too is BEAUTIFUL.

Pretty is in the superficial, and beauty is from the artistic soul.

Today the artistic soul is considered the “mentally ill” or “criminal”.

I just keep thinking back to when Duchamp handed in that urinal as a submission to an art gallery because that is what he thought of superficial American art back in 1917, and for that he will be forever my hero.

So next time you find yourself pissing in a urinal, just imagine yourself pissing on some idiot hipster shit that is passing for art these days.

It will probably work better as a mood uplifter than prozac!

            • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 4:34 PM #

              LOL!!!

You have indeed captured the just of the situation. With Nina and art in general.

I heard someone say the other day that art is not supposed to be pretty. It’s supposed to ugly and dirty. And that is about right.

Hey, have you ever listened The Angry Human Podcast? If not you may wanna check it out. It sounds like one of our exchanges.

What’s the word on that asshole that inserted his bullshit in those people’s lives up in Leith, ND?

              • Thelibertylamp September 6, 2013 at 4:44 PM #

LOL, I actually met Cobb face to face back in 2005 or 6?
He called me a “kike” when I shot his photo.

When I think about Cobb, I can’t really get mad at him as much as I get mad at the fact that this guy is a full blown schizophrenic, probably running around without a meds adjustment or probably sans meds altogether and needs mental health help really badly.
The guy needs to be hospitalized, he is completely off his gourd and has no grip of reality and really cannot function in the community.

He needs to be somewhere where he gets some care.

But, this will probably end violently and the .govs will gun him down or blow his nasty little Nazi town up.

Meanwhile, if there was a mental health intervention an his diseased mind was addressed properly it never would have gotten this far.

                • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 5:00 PM #

“Kike” that’s a funny word. Some like piss. I was called a “moon cricket” once by a demon seed skinhead. It was the funniest thing I had ever heard, and as soon as it fell outta his mouth I cracked up. I laughed so hard I had go and sit down. WTF is a “moon cricket”? I swear these effing people just sit down around a table or something and come up with the most ridiculous nonsense.

I had read that that dude was sick. Can’t someone do one of those involuntary committal or something of that nature? If that dude is hearing voices and shit then he’s a danger to everyone. Or maybe the government just wants him to act up so they can give him a nice warm lead shower….for all his hard work.

                  • Thelibertylamp September 6, 2013 at 5:09 PM #

I think “moon cricket” sounds really cool! I would be flattered if someone called me that, it sounds like someone with mystical powers.
Or the title of a really cool kid’s book with great illustrations.
The funniest was when a white supremacist called me a “peckerwood”. I had no idea what that meant, I thought of woody woodpecker, which was the first image in my mind. I’m still unclear what it means, and why a white supremacist would call me that.

But, I still like watching woody woodpecker cartoons, LOL!

                    • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 5:22 PM #

I guess “moon cricket” sounds cool, it sure as hell didn’t offend me.

I thought WS called themselves “peckerwood”? Oh well, I can’t figure those people out. Eff em’.

Woody woodpecker, that’s funny as well.

                    • Thelibertylamp September 6, 2013 at 5:37 PM #

I looked it up and found out “peckerwood” means and it means redneck white southerner.

                      *face-palm*

I am not any of those things, it makes no sense. I am glad Daryle wasn’t around to hear it because he still would be taking the piss out of me over it.

I am also glad he wasn’t within earshot when Cobb called me a “kike”, because that would not have ended up well…

These morons, it’s not about pride with them it’s about lashing out and harming.

                    • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 5:40 PM #

Yeah, most just need a hug and some reassurance that daddy’s not coming in the room later on tonight and have his way with their little butts.

imo if lauryn hill and Nina Simone had tried to make it in todays music industry and didn’t become famous at the time they did I don’t think they’d be famous. Nowadays they are too shallow, and want pretty, I see too many times where they have pretty people lip synching songs that the so called ugly people actually sang. The world is too superficial now. I mean come on a woman that looks like nina isn’t good enough to play nina but they use a person that looks nothing like her to play her. smh I bet if nina came back and tried to star in a movie about herself they’d say no and get a body double. It is a dam shame I mean I don’t care what the person looks like If their voice is on point that is all that matters, dam they are selling AUDIO not really Visual. But nowadays its more about selling the visual, imo they ain’t models damit they are singers, they are supposed to be two different things and sell two different things.

I’m gonna try to reply, but its early here and i can barely see this tiny keyboard. I really got to have my eye looked at, how ironic is that?

You are so right. Though talented as these women are they are light, bright and mostly white. See comments between Lady Liberty Lamp and I up top. I think he said it best.

            • hunglikejesus September 7, 2013 at 7:55 AM #

I meant The Liberty Lamp. I was call him Lady Liberty Lamp because that’s how I say it in my head.

Hmmm. Lauryn was an easy call. But how to guess Nina?
I will hit these tunes one more time before engaging in my late night activities. Peace.

    • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 4:36 PM #

It’s late night over there huh? You need to stop living in the future and come join us in the past.

Nina is automatic everybody takes thought. Bite your tongue Pete.

      • No Black Pete September 6, 2013 at 4:43 PM #

I tried that, but did not like it. I will remain out of sync for now. Bite my tongue? No, self-harm is no longer part of the plan. Time to save myself. Peace.

      • No Black Pete September 7, 2013 at 4:42 AM #

Ah. 2good reminded me that I had written about the white Black starlet awarded the role of Nina in the movie. http://noblackpete.wordpress.com/2013/01/04/black-pete-shows-what-kind-of-black-needs-to-be-ugly/
Until now I it did not even cross my mind to call Nina ugly. Weird, yes. So, all those people who called me weird, are just commenting on beauty? Hmm. I will have to rant about this in an article. Peace.

        • hunglikejesus September 7, 2013 at 8:07 AM #

I don’t know what kinda magical demon worked out that Zoe should play Nina. I do know that I’ll not watch it. And Zoe will pass a brick if you call her Black. So why Nina, in blackface no doubt. I’ll leave that, talked about this far much I’m the past.

  3. Jeff Nguyen September 6, 2013 at 7:50 PM #

Loved the Nina Simone interview where she was asked what it feels like to be free and she said, “No fear”. Lauryn Hill was on track to be the voice for this generation. Both artists in the true sense of the word. Your taste in music is impressive…

    • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 8:17 PM #

Jeff you must stop the flattery I don’t have any more money to pay you.

Nina had so many great quotes in her interviews. One of my favorites is when The Animals recorded House Of The Rising Sun, one of Nina’s songs, and when she confronted them she said……..google it. LOL!!! She didn’t say google it of course, I’m saying google it.

Lauryn is not to be counted out for being a voice. In fact, I think she’ll be more of a voice after coming out of the belly of the breast. I really hope so anyway.

Thank you Jeff for stopping by.

      • Jeff Nguyen September 6, 2013 at 8:25 PM #

You mean I can be getting paid for this, now you tell me…

I’m not counting Lauren out yet, either. Peace.

  4. mary burrell September 6, 2013 at 8:49 PM #

I love you soooo much, I love Nina, Lauryn and Amy Winehouse. xoxo.

    • hunglikejesus September 6, 2013 at 10:44 PM #

HEY!!!! Ms. Mary, where you been?

Yes. Nina, Lauryn, Amy them some singers huh? People talked greasy about Amy, but they couldn’t take nothing from her talent.

      Thank you, Ms. Mary.

  5. mary burrell September 6, 2013 at 8:51 PM #

    Lena James is good too.

  6. mstoogood4yall September 6, 2013 at 11:42 PM #

I’ll be honest I never really heard nina simone’s songs except feeling good and I thought someone else sang it. She has a beautiful voice she has a deep voice like maya angelou, a strong voice for strong beautiful women, what other great songs did she have.

    • hunglikejesus September 7, 2013 at 8:02 AM #

Nina is my spiritual mother and for some reason I have always felt that. I can remember a long time ago being in the park on my fathers shoulders listening to Nina perform. The sea of Afros all moving in unison to Ms. Nina, though she didn’t really make dance music, her vibe was so that you had to move.

She always seem to perform like she was at home in the mirror. Meaning, she didn’t care who was watching she was gonna be Ms. Nina. Her daughter now performs under that name, but I haven’t heard any of her music. I don’t think a I care to.
